Summary

The liberation of sexuality and sexual practice from the bonds of biological reproduction has radically changed our contemporary understanding of love and being in love. This is in turn has transformed the cultural codes deployed to represent that complex emotion, opening up new possibilities, notably with the increased visibility of transgender relationships. Yet the link between love and its corporeal expression remains a fraught one, as the body finds itself either exposed and overtly sexualized in the public space or on the contrary negated entirely as personal relationships become an ever more disembodied, virtual experience. Being but body or being denied one, such is the predicament of being in love today, a dichotomy which revisits the traditional division between the flesh and the spirit as the very contemporary opposition between physical and virtual reality, an opposition that calls into question the dematerialisation of emotional attachments, an overinvestment in the sexual and the consumerist rationalisation of relationships in the neo-liberal marketplace.
