- Summary
-
A two-way transitional object, according to H. Lefebvre, the window lets light and air get inside while constituting a point of observation of the outside world. The window thus has multiple functions and also substantiates different symbols, among others those of the interior and the exterior, the public and the private, the open and the closed. As a frame, it has had a major influence on landscape perception and, by extension, on painting. The book brings together studies analyzing the window in literature and the arts (painting, photography, theatre, cinema, architecture) through aesthetic, semiotic, historical and narrative approaches.
