- Summary
-
This collective work offers a unique approach to the relationship between music and politics. Through an interdisciplinary perspective (history, political science, musicology, sociology, information and communication sciences, language sciences), it analyses musical discourse by taking into account its dynamics of production, circulation and reception, depending on various socio-communicational contexts and mechanisms. The study of different musical contexts and genres – politically engaged rap, Nigerian reggae, alternative punk, militant music, Ukrainian anthems and propaganda – shows how complex the role of music in politics can be: alternately a tool of resistance and an instrument of power. This book highlights the central role of music in the construction, transformation and circulation of political discourse in the public sphere, questioning the links between engagement, memory, identity and emotion.
