Summary

A handful of members of the prefectorial corps took part in the Resistance during the nazi occupation. Among those deported, a small number died in the camps. Alfred Golliard born in 1881 is one of them. Prefect of Jura since 1934, he was dismissed by Vichy in September 1940 and joined the Cluny Resistance. With 60 other inhabitants of Cluny, he was arrested in February 1944, deported in Mauthausen and transferred to the Hartheim gaz chamber where he was put to death.

The book places the life, deeds and professional career of Golliard (a former student of Herriot) in the wider context of the history of the prefectorial civil service and the political developments of the period.
