- Summary
-
This book questions the perception and the reception of the concept of “difference” in the context of several distinct geographical areas of Scotland. It offers a reading of the evolution of the status of Scotland as a British region, as a province of the United Kingdom and as a nation in its own right. Scotland's linguistic, political, literary and cultural specificities are highlighted and compared to those of the other nations of the British Isles, Europe, and the world. The distinctive role played by Scotland in British colonial projects is also compared to that played by, for example, England. Is Scotland really different? That is the debate launched by this interdisciplinary book.
