Like the Phoenix, French rugby is now rising from its ashes, proof that its model is still popular. Since the end of the 19th century, French rugby players have built up a complex relationship with the British world, particularly during matches played at the Stade de Colombes, a bastion of rugby in continental Europe that has spread its influence as far afield as Italy. Invented around the brown amateurism of the XV and the open professionalism of the XIII, French rugby
has had its theoreticians of the game and its great dominating clubs like Richard Astre's AS Béziers. It has also been marked by the darker history of two world wars and the transformation of the French sporting landscape. And while the Top 14 championship is becoming increasingly metropolitan, and rugby and football are often associated with the south and south-west of France, rugby has also flourished in the lands of association football such as western France and Corsica.
