The World Cup organised in Qatar raises questions for obvious ethical and sporting reasons. In order to better understand this sporting tradition invented in 1930, this issue looks at its political, economic and heritage dimensions through a dossier of articles produced by leading academics, reviews of books, films and comics, correspondence from abroad and sections dedicated to the heritage and material culture of football. The organisation of a World Cup in the Middle East, the legacy of the 2006 edition in Germany, the Women's World Cup, the politicisation of French sport via the World Cup will be among the topics covered.

Paul DIETSCHY (edit. director)Paul Dietschy, born on 29 August 1964 in Paris, is a French historian, specialized in the field of sport and particularly football. He is professor of contemporary history at the University of Franche-Comté and director of the Lucien Febvre Centre.
