This volume gathers communications presented at the XXXVIIth international colloquium of the GIREA. It contains new proposals for the understanding of the slavery. The reflections that constitute this volume reinterpret issues and results that seemed to have been accepted by historians, philologists, philosophers, anthropologists or sociologists. It is obvious today that the slavery plunges its concrete and abstract roots into the most former forms of thought. Recent studies show that the reality of slavery obeys complex economic, psychological and social factors in many cultures.
