Cunning is an object of study as complex as it is fascinating, which affects all areas of human activity and even transcends the boundaries of humans to be used in the animal and plant world. In order to shed light on the multiple facets of cunning, we have launched a multi-year multidisciplinary research project. This first volume, which collects the contributions presented at an international symposium organized in Besançon (March 23-24, 2018), highlights the issues and the methods of the theoretical conception and the writing of the ruse of war in key eras of Western military history, from Antiquity to the Renaissance through the Middle Ages.
