This collection of papers on breastfeeding gathers contributions that discuss, from a historical and mythological viewpoint, data from antiquity found in literature, epigraphy, iconography, and archeology around the Mediterranean. Perspectives on breastfeeding offer a broad spectrum on the role of mothers, wet nurses, dietary changes, symbolic roles, transgressions, and religious signification. While physiological and cultural continuities are highlighted, changes related to sociocultural contexts are duly emphasized.
