Summary

Two cemeteries of the early Middle Ages were excavated in 1987-1990 and in 1995 near the village of Évans in the Doubs valley. The earliest one called « Sarrazins » has been established on the lower part of a south facing slope. Funerary wooden-chambers and stone - coffered tombs have occupied two distinct areas of this necropolis. Sixty-five tombs out of an estimated number of several hundreds have been discovered. Twenty-six contained goods, dating from the second half of the 6th c. to the third quarter of the 7th c. They have confirmed that remains were particular to the settling of people of Frankish origin as well as the elements reflecting an influence of a subset of the local population.

The second one called « Champ des Vis » is situated on a high point and associated with a church listed as a historic monument in 1991. Originally, the church probably used to serve as a burial place since carpentry coffins, cofferings built of flat stones, « mixed coverings » have been mostly used for several burials. Two hundred inhumations have been excavated. Few grave goods were found, dating from the late Merovingian up to the early Carolingian periods. A tomb dedicated to a rich figure has been established in a southern annex. The spatial separation and the grave goods point to the outstanding social status:symbols such as spurs suggest that the young man was a rider. The results of this excavation will constitute, from this time onwards, a reference framework helping to understand the origin of these small churches located in the countryside.

Although this area — all around Évans/Saint-Vit — was densely populated in the Gallo-Roman period, both cemeteries happen to have taken on freshly created sites after the Frankish conquest in the region of the Burgundian kingdom.
