- Summary
-
To the extent that many acts of religious devotion have as an object healing or the preservation of health, this book focuses on the different rites which in the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, established dialogue between men and gods. These latter were perceived both as the possible source of individual or collective illnesses and ills, and at the same time as the main actors in their healing. Analyze and characterize the action of healing deities, identify the place and issues of gestures, rites and religious behaviors linked to illness and suffering, from a both synchronic and diachronic perspective, these are the objectives of this work. It provides visibility on the evolution of relationships with divinity when the city or men were threatened by illness and suffering, and on the use of medicine, whose links with the gods and religion were much complex and nuanced than we believed for a long time.
