- Summary
-
The originality of Ernest Coumet’s works in history and philosophy of science is already clear in his 1968 thesis on the history of combinatorics at the beginning of the seventeenth century, before Pascal and Leibniz. Close reading of until then unknown texts and authors ; deep reflections on the development of mathematics and its cultural connections ; new paths circulating between language, music and combinatorics in early modern times, display the subtle practice of this important twentieth-century historian of science. Hitherto unpublished, this thesis witnesses the lasting relevancy of Coumet’s work.
